One of the most imposing and rarest raptors on the continent. The adult has overall pearl-gray plumage with a finely barred belly, a black banded tail and an erectile crest of ash-gray feathers that it raises when excited, giving the species its name. The bill and talons are very large. It measures 75 to 84 cm with a wingspan of 170 to 183 cm. Endangered both nationally and globally. One of the scarcest raptors in Argentina.
Behaviour
It hunts medium and large prey in grasslands and open woodlands: armadillos, vizcachas, hares and large snakes. Enormous territories of more than 100 km² per pair. It nests in tall trees or on cliffs, raising a single chick every two or three years.
How and when to see it
A sighting is an extraordinary event. The portals with extensive grasslands and tall woodlands such as Mburucuyá and San Nicolás have the most recent records.
