Great Black Hawk

Buteogallus urubitinga

The big dark raptor of the marshes, with a white tail base. It hunts snakes, eels and fish along the banks.

It is the eagle of the wetlands: it patrols the banks at low height or waits in a tall tree, dropping onto snakes, frogs, fish and even young caimans. Up close you see the very long yellow legs, made for wading the mud without wetting a feather.

Behaviour

Solitary or in pairs, always near water. It often walks the banks like a giant, serious hen.

How and when to see it

All year round. Check the tall trees beside lagoons and rivers: the dark silhouette with a white tail base is unmistakable.
