It is the eagle of the wetlands: it patrols the banks at low height or waits in a tall tree, dropping onto snakes, frogs, fish and even young caimans. Up close you see the very long yellow legs, made for wading the mud without wetting a feather.
Behaviour
Solitary or in pairs, always near water. It often walks the banks like a giant, serious hen.
How and when to see it
All year round. Check the tall trees beside lagoons and rivers: the dark silhouette with a white tail base is unmistakable.
