The mockingbird with the most contrasting and beautiful plumage. The head, neck and back are gray. The wings are black with a large white patch that is very visible in flight. The rump is rufous or cinnamon (its diagnostic feature) and the tail is white with a black center. The belly and flanks are whitish with an ochre tinge. The bill is long and slightly curved. It measures 24 to 28 cm. It lives in dry woodland, the espinal and grasslands with shrubs in the western and northern parts of the Iberá area. One of the finest songbirds in Argentine birdlife.
Behaviour
Solitary and very territorial. It sings from high exposed perches with a powerful, varied and musical voice that includes imitations of other birds and ambient sounds. It is one of the country's great songsters, though it sings mainly in its breeding range, farther south. In flight the tricolored pattern is very striking. It eats insects and berries.
How and when to see it
An austral autumn-winter visitor (it does not nest in Iberá; it breeds farther south). In the dry woodland of Portal San Nicolás and Mburucuyá.
