Campo Flicker

A woodpecker that is atypical for its terrestrial habits. The back and wings are finely barred in black and golden yellow. The face and neck are yellow. The crown and nape are black in both sexes, contrasting with the yellow face. The only feature that separates the sexes is the malar stripe (moustache): red in the male, black in the female. The male's malar stripe is red. The belly is whiter. It measures 30 to 34 cm. It is the largest and most visible woodpecker of the Iberá in open spaces. Frequent in grasslands, fields and the edges of open woodland.

Behaviour

Unlike most woodpeckers, it spends much of its time on the ground searching for ant and termite nests. It also digs into fallen logs. It eats mainly ants, termites and larvae. In the short grasslands of the Iberá it is easily seen walking on the ground with the characteristic gait of the woodpeckers.

How and when to see it

Year round. Especially easy to see on the ground in the grasslands and on the fence posts. Its call is a long, powerful, descending "kli-kli-kli-kli."
