The largest of the tinamous of Iberá, notably more robust than the spotted nothura. Its plumage is brown barred with black, with the rufous brightest on the wings (hence "colorada"); the neck and breast are a warm tone. The bill is long, slightly curved downward. It measures 38 to 42 cm and weighs between 700 and 1,040 g. Its common name refers to its fiery coloration.
Behaviour
Terrestrial and elusive. It inhabits tall grasslands, tall-grass marshes of paja brava and the edges of low woodland. Omnivorous diet: seeds, shoots, roots, insects and even small vertebrates. As with the nothura, the male takes on the entire task of incubation and rearing. Its song is a long, melancholy, flute-like whistle that resonates especially at dusk.
How and when to see it
Year round, most detectable in spring and summer when the males sing more frequently. Best seen by walking quietly along trails through the reed beds at dawn.
