A small bird of 15 to 17 cm whose most notable feature is a very characteristic crest of long, pointed reddish-brown feathers. The plumage is brown with whitish streaks on the head, neck and breast. The belly is paler. The bill is short and curved. A member of the ovenbird family (furnariids) that has adopted a more terrestrial and social lifestyle than its relatives. Typical of the dry Chaco woodland and the Espinal.
Behaviour
Gregarious. It lives in groups of 3 to 10 individuals that work the ground and low branches of the woodland in search of insects. The members of the group keep in contact with soft, continuous calls. It moves on the ground by hopping and turning over the leaf litter. It nests as a group in stick nests in thorny trees.
How and when to see it
Year round in the Chaco woodland. Detected by the soft calls of the group. Portals San Nicolás and Mburucuyá are the best sites.
