One of the most frequent harriers in the wetlands of Iberá. The adult male has black plumage on the back and head, with a white belly and breast and black primary feathers, creating a very marked contrast in flight. The female and juveniles are brown with a streaked belly. The typical white rump is characteristic of the harriers of the genus Circus. It measures 46 to 60 cm.
Behaviour
Flies low and slow over tall-grass marshes, reedbeds and wet grasslands hunting for prey, using both hearing and sight. It hunts field rats, other rodents, frogs, snakes and medium-sized birds. It is frequently attacked and harassed by the southern lapwing (tero) when it approaches their nests.
How and when to see it
Year round. Easily spotted from vehicle tracks across the grasslands and from the boardwalks. Active throughout the day.
