Medium-sized owl, 30 to 38 cm. The face is whitish, with chestnut cheeks and a dark border framing it, and the ear tufts are long, black and set very close together. The iris is brown, not yellow, which tells it apart from the great horned owl at a glance. The breast is whitish and ochre with thick dark brown streaks, and the wings and tail are barred.
Behaviour
Nocturnal. It prefers open and semi-open country, grasslands, woodland edges and groves, rather than the interior of closed forest. It hunts small mammals and birds, and nests on the ground among the grasses.
How and when to see it
Nocturnal. It turns up at dusk and at night, perched on posts and fence wires over open ground. Guided night outings are the best bet.
