A medium-sized bird of 18 to 20 cm with gray-brown plumage above and whitish with brown streaks on the breast. The crown is streaked and the malar stripe is white. The tail is long and reddish. The bill is short and curved. It builds one of the most striking nests of the Iberá: an enormous mass of dry branches and sticks piled in the branches of thorny trees, which can exceed 60 cm in diameter and weigh several kilos. The nest has a narrow side entrance that protects against predators.
Behaviour
Solitary or in pairs. It inhabits the Chaco woodland, the thorn scrub and grasslands with shrubs. It feeds on the ground and in the branches on insects, seeds and spiders. The bulky nest can be reused by the same pair for several years. Easily detected by its call, a series of descending "whe whe whe" notes.
How and when to see it
Year round. The enormous nests in the trees are the easiest way to find it. Portals San Nicolás and Mburucuyá are the best sites.
