A medium-sized parakeet with bright green plumage and a completely coal-black head that makes it unmistakable. The primary flight feathers are bright blue, very visible in flight. The thighs and the underwing coverts are red. The bill is grayish. The tail is long and bluish green. It measures 27 to 30 cm. Its core range is in the Chaco and the Pantanal; in Corrientes it is occasional, tied to palm groves and open woodland near the wetlands.
Behaviour
Gregarious and noisy. It flies in flocks of 10 to 50 individuals in fast, direct flight over the canopy of palms and trees. When the groups settle in a tree, they make a deafening racket. It feeds on palm fruit, seeds and shoots. It nests in hollow palms or in nests abandoned by other birds.
How and when to see it
Year round. The flocks in flight over the palms are one of the noisiest spectacles in the Iberá. Especially easy to see at dusk when they converge on the roost.
