A tanager of 17 to 19 cm with extraordinarily showy plumage in the male. The head, neck and wings are bright cobalt blue. The back has blue and black streaks. The breast, belly and rump are intense orange or orange-yellow. The female is much more subdued, olive with a yellowish belly. The bill is short and grayish. It inhabits Chaco woodland, gallery forest edges and the wooded environments of Iberá.
Behaviour
Social. It lives in groups of 5 to 20 individuals that move among the mid and high branches of the woodland and forest. It eats fruit, seeds and some insects. The male, with its blue-and-orange plumage, is very striking when it perches on exposed branches. The song is simple and not very distinctive.
How and when to see it
Year-round in the Chaco woodland and forest edges. The male is one of the most photographed birds of the woodland thanks to its brilliant plumage.
