An elongated bird of 18 to 20 cm with uniform gray-brown plumage, a prominent whitish supercilium and a cream-whitish wing band visible in flight. The outer tail feathers have white spots. The bill is long and slightly curved. An altitudinal migrant: it breeds in the Andes and the Patagonian hills and descends to the lowlands in autumn and winter. In the Iberá it is an occasional winter visitor along the shores of the water bodies.
Behaviour
Terrestrial and a bird of the water's edge. It moves by walking along the banks of rivers, streams and lagoons, sometimes wading into shallow water, picking up aquatic insects, small crustaceans and larvae. It bobs its tail up and to the sides as it walks. Solitary or in pairs.
How and when to see it
Autumn and winter (April to August) when it descends from the Andes. Seen along the banks of the rivers and lagoons of Portals Río Corriente and Galarza.
