A medium-sized woodcreeper of 19 to 21 cm with brown plumage above and densely streaked white on the head, neck and breast. The well-defined white streaks against a dark brown background are its most striking feature. The streaks on the belly are finer. The bill is medium, slender and slightly curved. The tail is reddish-brown with stiff shafts that it uses as a prop. It inhabits the Chaco woodland and the Espinal scrub, being one of the most common woodcreepers of the Argentine Chaco.
Behaviour
Solitary. It climbs the trunks of the woodland trees in an ascending spiral motion, pecking at the bark in search of insects, larvae and spiders. It frequently takes part in mixed flocks. Its song is a series of descending, accelerating notes.

Year round. Easy to see on the woodland trunks. Portal San Nicolás, Mburucuyá and the dry zone of Galarza.
