The most powerful generalist raptor of the Iberá. The adult has a uniform slate-gray back, head and breast, a white belly finely barred with gray, and an unusually short tail that gives it a distinctive silhouette in flight. The wings are huge and broad. Juveniles are brown with streaking. It measures 62 to 74 cm with a wingspan of 155 to 188 cm. The large species of the genus, the biggest of the "South American buzzard-eagles".
Behaviour
It hunts from high perches or from soaring flight on thermals. It takes medium and large prey: hares, vizcachas, rabbits, armadillos, young rheas and large snakes. Its soaring flight in circles at great height is majestic.
How and when to see it
Year round. Binoculars are needed to identify the plumage details from the ground. Portals of open woodland such as Mburucuyá and San Nicolás are the best sites.
