A medium-sized bird of 19 to 22 cm of the forest canopy. The male has a black crown and face, a greyish-white body and black wings with white patches. The bill is dark, with no red, unlike the other tityras, which have a red base to the bill. The female is brown with a darker crown and the same two-toned bill. It lives in the high canopy of gallery forest and woodland with tall trees. Uncommon and restricted to the portals with the best-preserved forest.
Behaviour
Solitary or in pairs. It perches in the high canopy, from where it sallies out to snatch fruit or catch insects in flight. It nests in tree cavities. The song is a low, harsh, nondescript sound. It occasionally joins mixed canopy flocks.
How and when to see it
Year-round in the portals with dense gallery forest. It is most easily detected when perched at the edge of the canopy.
