A medium-sized bird of 20 to 23 cm of the forest canopy. The male has a black head and crown, a whitish-gray body and black wings and tail with white edges. The face has an area of bare red skin around the eye. The bill is red with a black tip. The female is rufous-brown with a less intense face. Somewhat larger than the Black-crowned Tityra. It inhabits the canopy of the subtropical forest and the gallery.
Behaviour
Solitary or in pairs. Very similar in behavior to the black-crowned tityra: it perches in the high canopy and sallies out in flights to catch fruit. It tends to perch on exposed branches at the edge of the canopy, which makes it easier to spot. The call is a low nasal grunt. More common than the black-crowned tityra at some portales.
How and when to see it
Year-round at the portales with gallery forest. More visible than the black-crowned tityra because of its tendency to perch on exposed branches.
