A tyrant flycatcher of 20 to 22 cm very similar to the Great Kiskadee but with more streaked plumage. The crown is brown with pale streaks. The back is olive-brown with dark streaks. The breast is white with very marked brown streaks. The yellow crown patch is less visible than in the Great Kiskadee. The bill is stout. It prefers gallery forest and woodland with medium-sized trees, being more forest-dwelling than the Great Kiskadee.
Behaviour
A partial migrant: it arrives in spring and leaves in autumn and winter. It perches on canopy branches, from where it sallies out to catch insects or fruit. The song is similar to the great kiskadee's but with a preceding "chip". More elusive than the kiskadee, it prefers the forest interior.
How and when to see it
Mainly spring and summer. It is heard at the edges of the gallery forest. Portal Galarza, San Antonio and Laguna Iberá.
