A medium-sized parrot with bright green plumage. Its most striking feature is the bright red patches at the bend of the wings and on the thighs, visible especially in flight. The eyes have a bare white peri-ocular ring that gives it its scientific name (leucophthalmus = white eye). The bill is grayish and robust. It measures 32 to 36 cm. Very common in northeastern Argentina, where it gathers in large flocks.
Behaviour
Highly gregarious. It lives in flocks of 10 to 100 individuals that fly at great speed with piercing calls. It feeds in the canopy on fruit, seeds and flowers. It nests communally in hollow palms or in tree crevices. Very vocal in flight and when perching.
How and when to see it
Year round. The flocks are easy to locate by the noise. At dusk, large groups converge on communal roosts in the palms.
