A medium-sized parrot with deep green plumage and a very characteristic bright blue crown that gives it its name. The cheeks and forehead are blue, the rest of the body green with darker wingtips. The bill is curved and grayish. The tail is long and pointed. It measures 34 to 37 cm. It lives in gallery forest and Chaco woodland, and nests in tree cavities or in the abandoned nests of other birds.
Behaviour
Very noisy and social. It flies in groups of 5 to 30 individuals with continuous, shrill calls that announce its presence from afar. It feeds on fruit, seeds and flowers in the forest canopy. It occasionally comes down to the ground to eat mineral-rich clay soil.
How and when to see it
Year round. Easily detected by the noise before it is seen. The portals with well-preserved gallery forest hold the flocks.
