A medium-sized woodpecker with an olive-green back showing fine pale barring and scaling. The male's crown is blackish, finely streaked with red; the female lacks the red. The face is brown with a white supercilium. The belly is olive with white-yellowish mottling. The bill is greenish gray. It measures 16 to 18 cm. It is more characteristic of the subtropical Atlantic Forest than of the dry Chaco, and in the Iberá it is restricted to the access portals with greater influence from the Misiones rainforest.
Behaviour
Solitary. It forages on the trunks and branches of the canopy and understory of dense forest. Its diet includes larvae, insects under the bark and occasionally fruit. More elusive than the green-barred woodpecker, it prefers the forest interior to the edges.
How and when to see it
Year round in the portals with dense gallery forest of subtropical influence. Portal Galarza and San Antonio are the best sites.
