The smallest of the woodpeckers of the Iberá: barely 9 to 10 cm. The plumage is brownish olive above with white spots. The male's crown has white and red spotting in the center; the female has only the white spotting. The belly is white with fine black streaks. The bill is small for a woodpecker. Unlike the others, it does not brace itself on its tail and moves along the thin branches of the understory more like a warbler.
Behaviour
Very active and hard to follow. It moves nimbly along the fine and medium branches of the understory and forest edges, pecking at the bark and soft wood in search of insects and larvae. Its song is a high "ti-ti-ti" or high trill. It frequently joins the mixed flocks of insectivorous species that move through the forest.
How and when to see it
Year round in the understory of the gallery forest. Hard to see for its tiny size. Best detected when it takes part in mixed insectivore flocks.
