An icterid of 21 to 24 cm with glossy black plumage. The diagnostic feature is the wing coverts (shoulders) of an intense golden-yellow that is very visible when the bird opens or moves its wings. The eyes are grayish-white in adults. The bill is pale, whitish-gray. The base of the tail may have some yellow. It inhabits gallery forest and subtropical woodland where tall, fruiting trees are abundant.
Behaviour
Solitary or in pairs. It moves through the middle and upper levels of the forest trees and, unlike most of the caciques in its genus, it forms no flocks or noisy colonies. The song includes whistles, warbles and harsh calls of great variety. It feeds on fruit, insects and nectar. It builds its hanging nest in isolation, as it is a solitary, non-colonial nester.
How and when to see it
Year-round in the portals with well-preserved gallery forest. The noisy groups are easy to locate by sound.
