A medium-sized woodcreeper, 25 to 27 cm, with reddish-brown plumage on the back and fine whitish streaks on the neck and breast. The streaks are less defined than in the narrow-billed or scimitar-billed woodcreepers. The bill is medium-sized, broad and straight, unlike the curved bill of the scimitar-billed woodcreeper. The tail is reddish and stiff. It inhabits the gallery forest and the woodland with medium-sized and large trees, being more tied to dense forest than the Chaco woodcreepers.
Behaviour
Solitary. It climbs the forest trunks in spiraling movements, pecking at the bark. It often joins mixed flocks of understory insectivores. The song is a series of descending notes. It is distinguished from the narrow-billed woodcreeper by its broader, straighter bill and its preference for dense forest.
