Chivi Vireo

Vireo chivi

The migratory vireo of the canopy. Leaden-olive with a red eye. It sings nonstop from the canopy during the austral spring and summer. An austral migrant that breeds in northeastern Argentina.

A vireonid, 14 to 15 cm, with olive-green plumage on the back. The crown is leaden with black edges. The supercilium is white and the eye-stripe is dark. The belly is whitish with olive-yellow flanks. The eyes are red in adults, brown in juveniles. The bill is medium-sized and hooked. It is an austral migrant: it breeds in northeastern Argentina in the austral spring-summer and migrates to northern South America in winter. In Iberá it is an austral spring-summer visitor.

Behaviour

It inhabits the high canopy of the gallery forest. It searches for insects in the foliage with slow, deliberate movements. Its most striking trait is its incessant song: it sings almost all day from the canopy, even at midday in the heat, with short phrases of 2 to 4 notes repeated continuously.

How and when to see it

Spring and summer. In those months the insistent song from the canopy is unmistakable in every portal with forest.
