A vireonid of about 15 cm with a chunky body and an exceptionally robust, hooked bill that is longer than that of most birds its size. The plumage has a gray crown with a rufous-chestnut supercilium and a yellow throat. The back is olive-green. The belly is whitish. The malar stripe is cinnamon-reddish. It inhabits gallery forest and woodland with medium and large trees. Its song is one of the most characteristic voices of the subtropical forest.
Behaviour
Active in the canopy and high understory. It searches for large insects, larvae and spiders, which it extracts from the bark and foliage with its powerful bill. The song is a tirelessly repeated phrase, "juan chi-vi-ro" or variations of 3 to 5 notes, heard from dawn to dusk.
How and when to see it
Year-round. Very easy to hear in any portal with forest. Somewhat harder to see, as it stays in the dense foliage.
