The quintessential Amazon parrot of the Argentine interior. Bright green plumage with an intense turquoise-blue forehead and forecrown. The shoulders have an orange-yellow and red patch. The tail is green with a yellow tip and red at the base. The bill is grayish with an orange-red cere. It measures 36 to 39 cm. Its ability to mimic human voices and other sounds with great accuracy made it a victim of the pet trade that decimated wild populations. Today it is protected and classified as Near Threatened (IUCN).
Behaviour
Very social and noisy. It lives in flocks that can exceed 100 individuals at communal roosts. It feeds on fruit, seeds, flowers and shoots. It nests in the hollows of large trees. In the Iberá it is more frequent in the dry Chaco woodland than in the pure wetland areas.
How and when to see it
Year round. The communal roosts at dusk in Portals Galarza and Mburucuyá are spectacular.
