A robust, short-tailed parrot with generally green plumage. The head and neck are scaled grayish brown with a lilac tinge, and the breast is violet, very distinctive. The undertail coverts are an intense crimson red. The bill is blackish with a red base. It measures 27 to 29 cm. One of the most common parrots of the Misiones subtropical forest, which reaches northeastern Corrientes. Fast, direct flight with stiff wingbeats.
Behaviour
It moves in pairs or groups of 5 to 20 individuals in straight, noisy flight. It feeds mainly on canopy fruit, seeds and flowers. It nests in the hollows of tall trees. Quieter at the perch than in flight, where it gives continuous harsh screeches.
How and when to see it
Year round in the portals with subtropical forest. At dawn and dusk the groups fly to and from the roosts and feeding areas.
