A small tyrant flycatcher of 11.5 to 14 cm with a dark brown crown that contrasts with the olive upperparts and a diagnostic dark ear patch. The wings have two yellowish wing bars. The belly is yellowish. The bill is long and narrow for its size. It inhabits the understory of the gallery forest and the subtropical woodland, being more characteristic of dense forest than of the Chaco woodland.
Behaviour
Active in the low and middle understory. It moves among the branches and dense vegetation searching for insects with short flights from low perches. It frequently joins mixed flocks of understory insectivores. The song is a broken, stuttering chatter, like a frog-like trill.

Year-round in the portals with gallery forest. Best detected in mixed flocks of insectivores.
