One of the most distinctive woodcreepers on the continent. The bill is extraordinarily long (4 to 6 cm), slender and curved downward like a sickle, perfectly adapted to be inserted into the larval galleries of rotting trunks and cracked bark. The plumage is uniform rufous-brown with fine whitish streaks on the head and neck. The bill is pink-orange at the base and dark at the tip. It measures 22 to 27 cm.
Behaviour
Solitary. It moves up the tree trunks in a spiral, using its stiff tail as a prop, like the other woodcreepers. A specialist in extracting insect larvae from deep, curved galleries in the wood, using its curved bill to reach where the straight-billed woodcreepers cannot. It joins mixed insectivore flocks.

Year round in the portals with mature gallery forest. Best detected by following the mixed insectivore flocks.
