A tyrant flycatcher of 22 to 24 cm very similar to the Great Kiskadee in plumage: olive-brown back, yellow belly, black crown with a white supercilium and a concealed yellow patch. The diagnostic feature is the bill: very large, broad and flattened sideways, with a markedly curved lower mandible, which allows it to handle large prey such as sizable insects and hard-shelled fruit. It inhabits the canopy of the gallery forest.
Behaviour
It lives in the canopy and high understorey of the forest, being more of a woodland bird than the Great Kiskadee. It feeds mainly on large insects (cicadas, beetles, grasshoppers) that it catches in flight or takes from the foliage, complemented with fruit and berries. The song is a series of high-pitched notes, different from the Great Kiskadee's "bien-te-veo". Solitary or in pairs.
How and when to see it
Year-round in the portals with gallery forest. It can be confused with the great kiskadee, but the different bill distinguishes it well up close.
