Surucua Trogon in the Iberá Wetlands: where and when to see it

The trogon of the northeastern subtropical forest and one of the showiest birds in all the Iberá. The male has a bright metallic cobalt-blue head and neck, a golden-green iridescent back and wings, and a crimson-red breast and belly. The female is similar but with a gray head and neck. The long tail has white outer feathers with black barring. The bill is short and yellow-green. It measures 23 to 25 cm. Sedentary in well-preserved gallery forests.

Behaviour

Solitary or in pairs. It remains motionless for long periods on branches in the canopy or mid-understory, which makes it hard to spot despite its colors. It feeds on small fruit, insects and caterpillars, which it catches from its perch in short flights before returning. It nests in termite mounds or in tree hollows that it excavates itself.

How and when to see it

Year round in the portals with gallery forest. Best detected by its song: a series of descending, melancholic "co-co-co-co" notes. Dawn and dusk are the best times.
